Pope Sixtus V
Pope Sixtus V - otherwise known as Felice Peretti di Montalto - was the Holy Father of the Catholic Church from 1585 to 1590, during which time he ruled Rome with an iron fist in a velvet glove. Despite his draconian leadership (one of his first acts after his election as Pope was to have 500 criminals executed), he was known affectionately as Papa Peretti by the people and did much to stabilise Rome and rebuild its decaying infrastructure. His legacy is notable for having achieved more in five years than many other, far longer lasting papacies.
